Celebrating Amidst Crisis


 Philippines is considered to be one of the countries with numerous festivals of various types namely religious, national, or seasonal. Before the colonization of Spaniards, Filipinos practiced animism which is consist of rituals intended to please benevolent spirits. During the colonization of Spaniards, Christianity was introduced to Filipinos which makes Philippines the only predominantly Christian country in Asia. A number of festivals celebrated in the Philippines are of religious origin honoring the city or province's patron saint. In Vigan City, a festival is held every 25th of January to celebrate Saint Paul the Apostle, the city's patron saint. The festival usually lasts for several days including the anniversary of cityhood of Vigan city which is on 27th of January.


    Biguenos all over the world Biguenos from other parts of the country come together to celebrate the festival. This event can be compared to the returning  of family members  reunite with their family. Neighboring provinces send their participants to compete in the various games and activities being held. This festival is not only local but international wherein some national officials attend. This festival held in Vigan City attracts a considerable number of people that makes the city crowded which is avoided during the pandemic.



     Festivals is a way of Vigan City to project their rich culture and tradition. It can improve the city's tourism drastically, however, it can also increase the possibility of increasing the number of COVID-19 positive patients. Luckily, the city government has found a solution to this risk. Despite celebrating the festival, officials have implemented strict social distancing and the use of protective equipment to avoid the spread of the virus. Festivals celebrated during the pandemic may not be the same as before but at least it can still serve it's purpose without inflicting risks to people.


    Festivals are events that cannot be taken away from Filipinos. It is a way of improving tourism, getting together, and celebrating prosperity. Festivals in the Philippines are celebrated without fail no matter what the situation may be. The COVID-19 pandemic could not stop Vigan city from celebrating it's festivals for they have implemented ways to prevent the spread of the virus. Festivals in the city are really special and important so instead of cancelling the celebration, they have thought of ways to maintain safety.
