Tawid


       Philippines is a country rich in culture and tradition. Every year, numerous festivals are celebrated as part of a tradition. These celebrations are town holidays praising crossroads in history that highlights a province's rich culture and tradition.  Ilocos Sur, a province rich in heritage and unique culture, celebrates a  festival named “ Kannawidan Festival" or “ tawid" whih means heritage that is celebrated every year at the end of January to commemorate the anniversary of Ilocos Sur as a province.


       Kannawidan is considered as the most awaited celebration in the province of Ilocos Sur. This festival is an opportunity to ensure the conversion, preservation, and promotion of Iloco cultural, artistic, historical, and intellectual heritage while intilling pride and dignity to Ilocanos. This celebration has an incredible effect on individuals . The festival is also a way to improve the way of living of Ilocanos by attracting tourist through it’s display of extravagant culture and tradition.  Kannawidan is a spot exhibiting gifts, minds, wonders, and imaginative neighborliness that Filipinos ,particularly Ilocano’s.


       Celebrating Kannawidan festival is a way for Ilocanos to express their festivity. However, due to the occurrence of a global pandemic, controversies arose regarding the execution of the festival. The unseen enemy is a huge threat to everyone and it can even be considered a hindrance in celebrating the important festival. Although some may think that it is nearly impossible to celebrate the festival because of the current pandemic, Ilocanos' tactfulness paved a way to afford the expenses of smiling and enjoying Kannawidan. Kannawidan is plays a big role in their culture and is also a major part of their tradition so failing to celebrate the festival is not an option.



       Along with Ilocano's priority of festivity is their priority when it comes to health. To ensure the health of residents and tourists,  the provincial tourism office of the provincial government has announced strict guideline to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Food fares and sports activities will also be held however it would be strictly monitored to avoid health risks. Despite the pandemic, the celebration of the annual festival is made possible by simplifying the festival without stripping off it's essence.


       This year's festival is the 203rd anniversary of separation of the provinces of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte. This celebration is important for the whole province. These days are considered as the dark days wherein the economy has temporarily stopped. Many lost their jobs and are struggling however still manages to smile and celebrate events. All of us are wearing masks of smiles to hide our struggles and overcome challenges. In these times of hardships, it is essential  to stay positive and find entertainment despite turmoil.
