 A Better She, A Better Us


        Women, for so long, has been facing intersecting disadvantages for their age, gender, ethnic background, sexual identity, religion affiliation, income, and many more. We have witnessed the disadvantages faced by women. Vulnerability is arising within acts of discrimination and inequality which impacts women of all ages. For centuries, women have endured the neglect of their human rights and until today, majority are still striving to endure the unrighteous situations that are scathing their well-beings. Our society is patriarchal in which men are appointed as decision makers but how can our society accomplish it’s vision to improve when men are making decisions for women without being able to properly understand the struggles of women?


   Women have been the uncredited heroes behind the scenes. We must be outraged by the disadvantages that women still experience. Empower women! Empowerment pertains to including others who are often neglected during the decision-making process. Women has struggles that are often misunderstood by men mainly because they have not experienced them, thus, making these struggles irrelevant when in fact are serious challenges. To date, 75% of refugees and displaced persons at risk from war, famine, persecution, and natural disasters are women and children; every 10 minutes, an adolescent girl dies from violence; up to one-third of female adolescent population is reported to have experience sexual abuse. These challenges mentioned are only few of the struggles brought upon women.


       With all the struggles and nightmares women experience, we must not forget that women are not only victims for they are also heroes. Just like super heroes in movies, women hold a power. The power to cope, power to prevent, power to reduce risks, power for resilience, power to transform, and build back up better are all in the hands of women. All that we have to do is tap into that power and invoke it. Imagine the number of women living in our society and each one of them holds a power to change the world. Do you ever wonder how our world would be if the power women hold are utilized to their full extents?


        Empowering women may sound difficult at first for our society has been used to having submissive women. However, by persevering to reach our goals through a step by step process, women can be empowered little by little and drastically lift the weight upon their shoulders. Discrimination and standard gender roles must be out of the picture in order to break free from these gender based limits. In our generation, we must start to live equally in order to instill equality to the future generation. It is brings grief to see women experience discrimination and inequality, let us all stand to put an end to it.

        The freedom of the people is the wealth of the country . For many years we, Filipinos, have been experiencing freedom. Meanwhile, many years ago, the luxury of being free as a citizen and as a country was not granted upon our country. Instead, Filipinos has became slaves in their own backyard.
