Vaccine: A Key To A COVID Free Country

The world is currently in the battlefield desperately trying to conquer a global crisis caused by the SARS CoV-2 also known as the COVID-19 virus. From a mere epidemic that escalated quickly into a pandemic and is now tormenting humans physically and emotionally. As of now, there is no cure for the said virus, however, there are numerous vaccines namely Pfizer- BioNTech, Moderna vaccine, Oxford-AstraZeneca, and many more. For almost a year, the availability of a COVID-19 vaccine has been awaited but now that it is already available, not all are willing to be vaccinated. In times of crisis, specially when it comes to health, is grabbing every oppurtunity to be rid of risks not be grabbed? Although there are doubts about vaccines, it should always be taken into consideration that the vaccines released to the public are proven and tested safe. Because of the pandemic, immunity of every individual should be the priority of every country.

Vaccines activate our immunity to help fight off diseases thus preventing the body from getting sick. (Norsk, 2018) Now that there is a COVID-19 outbreak, vaccination is of essence. Doubting available vaccines during the heat of the pandemic is truly a bad decision. Availability of vaccines has been lobg awaited so why not utilize them now that they are available? Everyone should participate in the immunity for prevention is better than cure, also considering that there is no cure.

Vaccines, before being authorized for public use, are studied and tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which would normally take several months or even years. Contradictory to this, there are a few vaccines given an emergency authorization due to the risks of the pandemic and public demand. One of the vaccines is Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine which is proven to be 95% effective in preventing the COVID-19 virus with symptoms among people with the age of 16 years and above. Another vaccine is the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine which is proven to be 94% effective in preventing COVID-19 virus with symptoms among people with the age of 18 years and above. And last is the Janssen or Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine which 66% effective in preventing COVID-19 virus with symptoms among people with the age of 18 years and above. All these vaccines has high efficacy in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus with only mild side effects. (Mayo Clinic, 2021)

Have you ever heard of herd immunity? Herd immunity is achieved when majority of the population is immune to a disease resulting to a slower spread of a disease. According to Cassoobhoy (2020) 75%-80% of the world population must be vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity. Because there is a lack of vaccine supply for everyone, and considering that not everyone is willing to be vaccinated, herd immunity is one of the best solutions to atleast descrease the spread of COVID-19. This will benefit the world as a whole specially that it will protect those who are not yet able to get vaccinated such as babies or those under the age requirement.

Vaccines are humanity's hope against the deadly virus. Vaccination resulting to immunity would prevent the further spread of the virus. After a long wait for vaccines to be available, everyone should be willing to subject themselves for vaccination in order to not only protect themselves but also others. Vaccince introduced to the public has high efficacy rated and are proven by several trials to be safe. There is no need to fear for vaccines bring protection and not harm. Herd immunity must be achieved to protect the whole world from COVID-19 and may be soon even eradicate the virus.
